Dad's 75th birthday.

Mom text after I asked when it would be a good time to call Dad:

Dad is having a lot of pain right now. Just took two pain pills. Give him an hour for them to take affect. He has had good periods and bad today. This now is the worst pain. Overall better then yesterday.

In the evening, I spoke with Dad over the phone for a while. We discussed backyard birds and gardening. It was a decently long conversation, and then he needed to rest.
